Charles T. Bannerman, Texas legislator, was born September 15, 1830, in Leon, Florida, son of Joseph William and Hannah Jane (Cromartie) Bannerman. The Bannerman family moved to Texas around 1843 and settled in what would later be eastern Leon County on the banks of the Trinity River. In August 1861 Charles Bannerman was elected to the Ninth Texas Legislature representing Madison and Leon counties. On September 7, 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate Army as adjutant of Company D, Gould's Sixth Battalion, Texas Cavalry. Bannerman fought at the Battle of Mansfield, Louisiana, and was wounded nearby at the Battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, on April 9, 1864. He recuperated in the home of the Moss family in Mansfield, Louisiana, and following his recovery married Miss Sarah Gardner Moss on August 4, 1864. Bannerman's injury precluded returning to his unit, so he and his wife returned to the Bannerman home in Leon County. The couple had two children. Charles T. Bannerman died on February 6, 1867, and was buried in the family cemetery.
