Barrel Springs Creek begins 2½ miles northwest of Montague in central Montague County (at 33°40' N, 97°45' W) and runs northwest for twelve miles to its mouth on Salt Creek, a mile east of Belcherville (at 33°48' N, 97°48' W). It traverses generally flat terrain surfaced by clayey and sandy loams that support water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses. For most of the county's history, the Barrel Springs Creek area has been used as rangeland.
