Bates Creek rises two miles south of Big Head Mountain in northern Comal County (at 29°58' N, 98°20' W) and runs southeast for five miles to its mouth on the Guadalupe River (at 29°55' N, 98°17' W). With the construction of Canyon Lake in the 1960s, the lower reaches of Bates Creek were inundated. The terrain through which the creek passes is generally flat with local deep dissections surfaced by shallow, stony soil that supports oak, juniper, and mesquite.
