Bayou Carrizo

Bayou Carrizo, also known as Carrizo Creek, rises a mile south of Appleby in east central Nacogdoches County (at 31°42' N, 94°36' W). It formerly flowed southeast for twenty-one miles to empty into the Angelina River near Kingtown. Since the construction of Sam Rayburn Reservoir in the mid-1960s, the creek has been inundated in its lower reaches and now enters the lake a mile north of Kingtown (at 31°25' N, 94°31' W). The stream is intermittent in its upper reaches. It traverses flat terrain with local shallow depressions, surfaced by clay and sandy loam that supports water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses along the bank.
