John Thomas Bean, Texas legislator, was born in Tennessee on May 11, 1817. John Bean moved to Texas and settled on the Neches River around 1838 near the town of Town Bluff. He served as county constable for the Menard District during the Republic of Texas. Bean married twice. In 1844 he married Nancy Minerva Foster; they had several children. After her death in 1866, Bean married Narcissa J. Fulgham in 1867. John Bean served as enumerator of the 1850 census for Tyler County.
Bean was a member of the Ninth Texas Legislature, and on March 1, 1862, organized a company of the Thirteenth Texas Cavalry in Woodville, Texas. He commanded Company K until the Trans-Mississippi Department surrendered in June 1865. After the war he returned to his farm in Tyler County. John Bean was a member of the Woodville Masonic Lodge. He died in 1885 and is buried in the family cemetery near Colmesneil, Texas.
