Bear Mountain is twenty-three miles northwest of Fort Davis in central Jeff Davis County (at 30°41' N, 104°15' W). It rises to an elevation of 7,256 feet above sea level, some 1,700 feet above State Highway 166, a mile to the south. The shallow, stony soils on the mountain support scrub brush and grasses.
