Big Aguja Mountain is located fourteen miles north of Fort Davis in northeastern Jeff Davis County (at 30°47' N, 103°51' W). The higher of the mountain's twin peaks rises to an elevation of 5,722 feet above sea level, eighty feet higher than its neighbor and some 1,800 feet higher than Farm Road 1832, two miles to the north. The area's shallow, stony soils support live oak, piñon, juniper, and grasses. Aguja, Spanish for "needle" or "spire," refers to the mountain's shape.
