Big Elm Creek rises two miles north of Lavender in east central Limestone County (at 31°33' N, 96°39' W) and runs southwest for sixteen miles to its mouth on Big Creek, ten miles east-northeast of Marlin in Falls County (at 31°24' N, 96°44' W). The creek crosses flat to rolling prairie with local shallow depressions and a surface of dark, calcareous clays and sandy loams that support water-tolerant hardwood and conifers near the creek and mesquite, cacti, and grasses in the surrounding area.
