Big Head Mountain is 22½ miles northwest of New Braunfels in northwestern Comal County (at 29°59' N, 98°19' W). It rises 153 feet above Carper's Creek, on its east side, to an elevation of 1,473 feet. The surrounding area of the Balcones Escarpment is flat to rolling and, in places, deeply and densely dissected. The loam land surface, broken with rock outcrops, primarily supports live oak and Ashe juniper woods.
