Big Onion Creek rises five miles southwest of Waxahachie in northeastern Ellis County (at 32°21' N, 96°56' W) and flows southeast for fourteen miles over generally flat terrain surfaced with clay and sandy loams that support water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses. For most of the county's history, the Big Onion Creek area has been used as range and crop land. Big Onion Creek joins Little Onion Creek to form Onion Creek a mile northeast of Avalon (at 32°14' N, 96°45' W).
