Big Sandy Creek rises just east of Harmony in extreme southeastern Hopkins County (at 33°01' N, 95°21' W) and runs southeast for eighteen miles, across eastern Wood County and the southwestern corner of Upshur County, to its mouth on the Sabine River, a mile southeast of Big Sandy (at 32°33' N, 95°04' W). The stream, which is intermittent in its upper reaches, is dammed southwest of Winnsboro to form Lake Winnsboro. It traverses generally flat terrain with local shallow depressions, surfaced by clay and sandy loam that supports water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses.
