Big Stinking Creek rises six miles southwest of Aspermont in central Stonewall County (at 33°08' N, 100°25' W) and flows northeast for sixteen miles to join the Salt Fork of the Brazos River in the northern part of the county (at 33°15' N, 100°11' W). The stream is fed by sulphur springs, the smell of which accounts for its name. It traverses an area of moderately steep slopes with locally high relief, surfaced by silt loams. In addition to mesquite, swamp grasses and algae grow in the area. Hawks and dragonflies hover overhead.
