Birches Creek rises at the confluence of Hetty Branch and Wallace Branch, two miles west of Taylors Chapel in north central Cherokee County (at 32°02' N, 95°14' W), and runs northeast for five miles to its mouth on Mud Creek, two miles east of Gould (at 32°03' N, 95°10' W). The stream, intermittent in its upper reaches, crosses flat to gently rolling terrain surfaced by sandy and clay loam that supports grasses and mixed hardwoods and pines.
