Bird Creek rises in the middle of Temple, in north central Bell County (at 31°07' N, 97°21' W), and extends southwest for four miles to its mouth on the Leon River, just south of Temple (at 31°03' N, 97°25' W). The stream was named for John Bird, a captain in the Texas Rangers who was killed in an Indian fight on its banks in 1839. Most of the creek is in Temple.
