Bitter Creek begins a half mile southwest of Nolan in east central Nolan County (at 32°16' N, 100°16' W) and runs north for twenty-seven miles to its mouth on Sweetwater Creek, a mile west of Eskota in southeast Fisher County (at 32°32' N, 100°16' W). The stream is dammed southeast of Sweetwater to form Sweetwater Lake. Upstream, it runs through steeply sloping terrain with benches; downstream, it crosses flat land with local scarps and locally shallow depressions. Juniper, live oak, mesquite, grasses, hardwoods, scrub brush, water-tolerant hardwoods, and conifers grow in the area.
