Black Mountain is ten miles west of the Rio Grande and six miles north of the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area in eastern Brewster County (at 29°44' N, 102°51' W). With an elevation of 3,642 feet above sea level, it rises some 920 feet above Reagan Canyon, four miles to the east. Shallow, stony soils on Black Mountain support live oak, piñon, juniper, and grasses.
