The Black Mountains are thirty miles northeast of Sierra Blanca in east central Hudspeth County (their center is at 31°34' N, 105°09' W). The range is 4½ miles long from east to west. Its highest elevation is 5,561 feet above sea level. The area's land surface of shallow, stony soils supports scrub brush and grasses.
