Black Peak, also known as Back Peak, is thirteen miles northwest of the Persimmon Gap Ranger Station in central Brewster County (at 29°43' N, 103°23' W). The peak, at an elevation of 4,818 feet above sea level, rises some 1,560 feet above Chalk Draw, a mile east. Shallow, stony soils on Black Peak support scrub brush and grasses.
