Black Spring Branch begins two miles southeast of Purves in southern Erath County (at 31°59' N, 98°14' W) and runs northeast for three miles to its mouth on Little Green Creek, two miles south of Alexander (at 32°01' N, 98°12' W). The stream is dammed to form Soil Conservation Service Reservoir 13 at its mouth. The area's steep slopes and benches are surfaced by shallow clay loams that support juniper, live oak, mesquite, and grasses.
