Bluff Creek rises a mile southeast of U.S. Highway 277 and six miles northeast of Shep in southeast Taylor County (32°12' N, 100°03' W) and extends southeast for thirty-nine miles before emptying into Elm Creek 2½ miles east of Hatchel in north central Runnels County (at 31°51' N, 99°54' W). Bluff Creek rises in steeply sloping terrain with benches, flows through flat to rolling terrain with local scarps, and ends in flat land with locally shallow depressions. Juniper, live oak, mesquite, and grasses predominate in the upper reaches, scrub brush and grasses in the mid-section, and water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses in the lower reaches.
