Boardtree Creek rises west of the Illinois Bend oilfield in northeastern Montague County (at 33°51' N, 97°33' W) and runs north for three miles to its mouth on the Red River, west of Illinois Bend on the Texas-Oklahoma border (at 33°54' N, 97°33' W). It crosses flat terrain with local shallow depressions surfaced by clay and sandy loam that supports water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses.
