Boracho Peak, thirty-nine miles northwest of Fort Davis in northwestern Jeff Davis County (at 30°56' N, 104°23' W), rises to an elevation of 5,647 feet above sea level, some 1,000 feet above the Culberson county line, a half mile north. Its shallow, stony soils support live oak, piñon, juniper, and grasses. Various explanations of the name have been offered, including the suggestion that it is Spanish for "violet-colored" or a misspelling of borracho, Spanish for "drunk."
