Buffalo Creek, in central Johnson County, is formed by East and West Buffalo creeks. East Buffalo Creek rises five miles northwest of Keene in north central Johnson County (at 32°27' N, 90°22' W) and runs southwest for ten miles to Cleburne, where it joins West Buffalo Creek (at 32°20' N, 97°23' W). West Buffalo Creek rises two miles west of Joshua (at 32°28' N, 97°25' W). The consolidated stream runs southwest for five miles to its mouth on the Nolan River, 5½ miles south of Cleburne in southwestern Johnson County (at 32°16' N, 97°24' W). Buffalo Creek crosses low-rolling to flat terrain with sandy and clay loam and dark calcareous clay topsoils that support scrub brush, cacti, mesquite, and grasses.
