California Creek, also known as South Paint Creek, rises nine miles east of Rotan in northeastern Fisher County (at 32°51' N, 100°18' W) and runs northeast for seventy miles, across northern Jones County and southeastern Haskell County, to its mouth on Paint Creek, near the Haskell-Throckmorton county line (at 33°05' N, 99°33' W). The stream is dammed four miles south of Hamlin to form South Lake. It crosses an area of flat to gently rolling to steeply sloping terrain surfaced by moderately deep to shallow silt and clay loam that supports mesquite, grasses, juniper, live oak, and scrub brush.
