California Creek rises four miles west of Feely in south central Val Verde County (at 29°37' N, 101°02' W) and runs south for seven miles to its mouth on the northern shore of Amistad Reservoir (at 29°33' N, 101°01' W). It dissects cretaceous limestone and ends on an alluvium of gravel, sand, clay, and silt. The surrounding dark, calcareous stony clays and clay loams support oaks, junipers, mesquites, and grasses. The creek was probably named by workmen on the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway, who laid the tracks four miles west of the creek in 1882. The men said the place was as close to California as they ever expected to be.
