Caney Creek rises within the Red River Army Depot a mile south of Hooks in central Bowie County (at 33°27' N, 94°18' W) and runs south for ten miles to its mouth on Big Creek, three miles east of Maud (at 33°20' N, 94°17' W). The upper and middle reaches of the creek have been dammed to form Caney Creek Reservoir just inside the southern boundary of the depot. Along the creek's lower reaches the stream cuts through clay that supports forests.
