Caney Creek rises a half mile north of Whitewright in west central Fannin County (at 33°33' N, 96°24' W) and runs northeast for 22½ miles to its mouth on the Red River, a mile west of Mulberry and within a mile of the city limits of Savoy (at 33°43' N, 96°19' W). The stream is intermittent in its upper reaches. It traverses flat to rolling terrain surfaced by clays and sandy loams that support oak, juniper, mesquite, and grasses. For most of the county's history the Caney Creek area has been used as crop and range land.
