Caney Creek (Hopkins County)

Caney Creek rises a mile north of Pickton in extreme southeastern Hopkins County (at 33°03' N, 95°22' W). The stream, which is intermittent in its upper reaches, formerly ran southwest for eighteen miles to its mouth on Lake Fork Creek, three miles west of Quitman in Wood County (at 32°49' N, 95°33' W). In the late 1970s its lower streambed was inundated by Lake Fork Reservoir, and since then the creek has flowed into the reservoir two miles east of Yantis in northwestern Wood County. The stream traverses generally flat terrain with local shallow depressions, surfaced by clay and sandy loams that support water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses.
