Caney Creek rises seven miles north of Newton in western Newton County (at 30°54' N, 93°47' W) and runs southeast for 19½ miles to its mouth on the Sabine River, four miles west of Merryville, Louisiana (at 30°44' N, 93°37' W). It is intermittent in its upper reaches. The creek was the site of early settlement and several mills. It flows through a flood-prone area of canebrakes.
