Caney Creek (Polk County)

Caney Creek, one of two watercourses by this name that begin in Polk County, rises three miles north of Onalaska in the western part of the county (at 30°51' N, 95°00' W) and runs southwest for 2½ miles to its mouth on Lake Livingston, 5½ miles southeast of Carlisle (at 30°49' N, 95°08' W). It crosses rolling to steep terrain, some badlands, and some prairies. Clay and sandy loams in the area support pine and hardwood forests, some mesquite, and grasses. Before the completion of Lake Livingston in 1968 Caney Creek ran twice its present length before joining the Trinity River, which now feeds the lake.
