Cedar Creek (Big Cedar Creek) rises a mile north of Frankell in southeastern Stephens County (at 32°36' N, 98°45' W) and runs northeast thirty-six miles to its mouth on Possum Kingdom Lake, southeast of Farm Road 1148 (at 32°53' N, 98°37' W). The creek has been dammed to form Lake Necessity in its upper reaches. The surrounding generally flat terrain has local shallow depressions and is surfaced by clay and sandy loam that supports water-tolerant hardwoods and grasses.
