Corpus Christi State School was opened in June 1970 as a residential facility for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. It was damaged by Hurricane Celia on August 3, 1970, and resumed partial operations by 1971. The 211-acre campus is on land formerly belonging to the Cliff Maus Airport. Thirty-five buildings provide 214,000 square feet of space that includes rooms for 410 intellectually disabled individuals. The budget for 1993 was $22 million. Residents receive medical, recreational, speech and hearing, occupational, physical therapy, dental, and outreach services. Community services include Bay to Bay Infant Stimulation, for babies to three years old; Maverick County Association, with a program in Eagle Pass; the Beeville Living Complex; Kenedy Apartment Living Program; Windrush Apartment Living in Corpus Christi; Alice Workshop: Beeville Adult Habilitation Service; Crystal City Adult Habilitation Service; Dilly Adult Habilitation Center; Ingleside Adult Habilitation Center; and Karnes City Adult Habilitation Center. The school opened with 250 students in 1970. It increased to 566 students in 1980, with changes in the classification of the intellectually disabled to include both resident and nonresident students. In 1990 the school had 394 clients.
