Friday Mountain, a peak 4¼ miles northeast of Driftwood in north central Hays County (at 30°09' N, 97°58' W), reaches an elevation of 1,060 feet above sea level. It was named for the day that early surveyors first arrived at the location. From 1852 to 1872 Friday Mountain marked the site on Bear Creek of the Johnson Institute, one of the first secondary schools in Central Texas. In 1942 Walter Prescott Webb of the University of Texas purchased the site, restored and expanded the former school, and reopened it as a boys' camp, Friday Mountain Ranch.
