Gordon, John Fletcher (1828–1898)
John Fletcher Gordon, pioneer and local official, was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, on January 29, 1828. In 1848 he and his brother, William H. Gordon, moved to Seguin, Texas. In 1856 John Gordon married Polly Newell Sanders of Virginia. They had nine children. Gordon was the first district clerk of Guadalupe County and for twelve consecutive years after the Civil War was sheriff of the county. Later he was deputy collector of customs at the port of Indianola and subsequently held the same position at Eagle Pass. He served a four-year term as postmaster in Seguin during the administration of Benjamin Harrison, after which he retired. On July 26, 1898, he died suddenly from a heart attack.
