Adolph Carl Ludwig Groos, pioneer and state legislator, was born on October 19, 1835, at Strass Ebersbach, Dillenburg, Germany, the son of Carl Wilhelm Apollo and Sophie Wilhelmine Luise (Martin) Groos. He came with his widowed father and brothers and sisters to Texas on November 21, 1848, on the ship Louis. Adolph married Johanna Brey on August 13, 1859, at Round Top, Texas. They had eight children. Johanna was the daughter of Ferdinand Brey, a Mier expedition prisoner who died in an escape attempt in 1843. Groos was a successful farmer and a Democrat. He represented Fayette County in the Nineteenth Texas Legislature (1885), where he was appointed to the House Committee on Agriculture and Manufactures. He moved to San Antonio in 1896 and died there on November 15, 1919. He was buried in Mission Burial Park.
