Harley, James A. (1883–1942)
James A. Harley, lawyer, legislator, county official, and soldier, son of John and Ann (Breslin) Harley, was born on March 1, 1883, at Seguin, Texas. After receiving an LL.B. degree from the University of Texas in 1908, he practiced law in Seguin from 1908 to 1917, served as county attorney for Guadalupe County from 1910 to 1913, and represented the Twenty-first District in the Texas Senate from 1913 to 1917. He married Nora Holmes of Seguin on January 21, 1916; they had a daughter. During World War I Harley was a major in the Thirty-sixth Infantry Division, Texas National Guard, and was adjutant general of Texas from September 29, 1917, to September 30, 1919. After 1919 he lived in San Antonio, where he practiced law and was secretary and executive director of the housing authority. He died in San Antonio on June 15, 1942.
