Devereaux (also spelled Devereux) Dunlap Holland was born on August 25, 1825, in Henry County, Tennessee. He was the second of three children of Spearman and Nancy W. Holland. Sometime in the 1840s the Holland family moved to Texas. On December 27, 1847, he married his first wife Anna Eliza Cock in Panola County. Anna was born in 1828 in Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi, the second of three children of Joseph and Sarah Wade Winston Cock. Devereaux and Anna Holland had at least six children. By October 1850 Devereaux and other Holland family members settled in Carthage, Panola County, Texas, where he engaged in farming and owned land valued at $1,200. On November 10, 1854, he purchased thirty-nine slaves from his father Spearman for $14,400. By August 1860 he was a wealthy planter with a real estate value of $12,000 and personal property worth $40,000. On January 9, 1863, his wife Anna died and was buried in Panola County.
He was a latecomer to service for the Confederacy and joined the First Cavalry Battalion, State Troops in late 1863 as a lieutenant colonel. On December 18, 1863, they joined with other smaller state cavalry troops to form part of the Second Division led by Brig. Gen. J. E. Slaughter.
After his service during the war, Holland returned to Panola and continued farming. He married his sister-in-law, Sallie Clementina Cock, on March 22, 1864, in Rusk County, Texas. The couple had no children. As of June 1880 Devereaux and Sallie were living in Walker County, Texas, along with three of his children from his first marriage. Devereaux and two of his sons were farmers. He died in Riverside, Texas, on November 2, 1882, and was buried in Walker County.
