Kingwood, a project of the Friendswood Development Company, an Exxon subsidiary, and King Ranch, is a suburban residential community on a 14,000-acre tract on the East Fork of the San Jacinto River in extreme northeastern Harris County. Plans for the community included greenbelts, shopping centers, schools, churches, recreational facilities, riding and hiking trails, and a boat ramp with access to Lake Houston. The Kingwood schools are part of the Humble school district. The population grew from fifty in 1986 to 19,443 by 1990, when the community had 204 businesses. The population in 1992 was 37,397. By 2000 Kingwood had been annexed by the city of Houston.
