Eduard Ludecus, author of an early travel narrative of Texas, was born in 1807 in Weimar, Thuringia. Employed by an export business in northern Germany, he became interested in the United States and in October 1833 journeyed to New York, where he met Dr. John Charles Beales, who was recruiting colonists for his proposed settlement in South Texas. Ludecus accompanied Beales on his trip to Texas in 1834. His letters giving an account of the journey were published in Leipzig in 1837 as Reise durch die Mexikanischen Provinzen Tumalipas, Cohahuila, und Texas im Jahre 1834; the letters were later translated into English. Ludecus died in 1879.
