The North Texas and Santa Fe Railway was chartered by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway on July 25, 1916, to build from Shattuck, Oklahoma, to Spearman, Texas, a distance of eighty-five miles. Although World War I delayed construction of the line, it was opened on July 1, 1920. The NT&SF was leased to the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway Company, another Santa Fe subsidiary, for operation. The capital was $100,000. Members of the first board of directors included E. P. Ripley of Cook County, Illinois, and F. C. Fox, E. A. Goeldner, J. N. Freeman, A. E. Meyer, Ray Wheatley, and Squire H. Madden, all from Potter County, Texas. Seventy-five miles of the NT&SF were in Texas, and the line promoted the growth of towns such as Spearman, Perryton, and Booker. On January 7, 1931, the P&SF began construction of an extension from Spearman to Morse. However, the construction authority was transferred to the NT&SF due to restrictions placed on the P&SF bonds. The nineteen-mile extension was completed in 1931. The NT&SF was leased to the P&SF until 1948 when it was merged into the latter company. In 1990 the former NT&SF was acquired by the Southwestern Railroad.
