Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site is at the junction of State highways 511 and 1847, two miles north of Brownsville in Cameron County. The park includes the site of the battle of Palo Alto, the first major engagement of the Mexican War, fought on May 8, 1846. In early 1990s the park was still undeveloped, and there was no access to the area or public facilities.
