Shelton, George M. (1877–1949)

Art Leatherwood Biography Entry

George M. Shelton, Medal of Honor recipient, was born at Brownwood, Texas, on December 23, 1877, the son of Amos and Octavia Shelton. He entered military service at Billington, Texas. Private George M. Shelton was a member of Company I, Twenty-third United States Infantry, on April 26, 1900, at La Paz, Leyte, Philippine Islands, during the Philippine Insurrection, when he advanced alone under heavy enemy fire and rescued a wounded comrade. Shelton died on January 18, 1949, in San Francisco and is buried in the San Francisco National Cemetery at San Francisco, California.
