The Texas Association of Museums is a nonprofit organization that serves as a liaison between museum and museum-related agencies and as a clearinghouse for information for and about museums. The association, which was formally chartered in 1975, grew out of the Texas Museums Conference, begun in the 1960s. The association is headquartered in Austin and is governed by a council of fourteen trustees, all of whom are Texas museum professionals. This group directs TAM's affairs through the efforts of individual committees and quarterly council meetings. In 1993 the association was managed by an executive director, with a staff consisting of a full-time administrative assistant and a part-time program assistant. In addition to organizing a four-day annual meeting and publishing a newsletter, Museline, and other publications, the TAM also sponsors various workshops, seminars, regional meetings, and minority internships. Among its programs was the Resource Sharing Project, which encouraged museums across the state to share their collections and resources.
