Texas United Methodist Historical Society

The Texas United Methodist Historical Society was organized in Dallas on February 5, 1975, at the initiative of Walter N. Vernon, historian of the North Texas Conference, United Methodist Church. Its annual meeting in February at the Bridwell Library, Southern Methodist University, features historical papers and workshops. The society publishes a quarterly newsletter and grants the annual Kate Warnick Award for the best United Methodist local church history of a small church and of a large church. The organization arranged with the Bridwell Library to microfilm the Texas Christian Advocate (now the United Methodist Reporter, a national paper). It sponsored the publication in 1984 of 11,000 copies of Vernon's The Methodist Excitement in Texas.
