Volkner, James K. (ca. 1807–1836)

James K. Volkner, soldier, was born about 1807. He emigrated to Texas from his home in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and fought in the Texas Revolution. He served under the command of Col. James W. Fannin, Jr., in 1835–36 in the company of Capt. Burr H. Duval. Volkner was killed in the Goliad Massacre on March 27, 1836. The records reflect variations in the spelling of this German name. Muster rolls list J. Q. Volikmar, while the Telegraph and Texas Register listed him as J. Q. Volckner. Still other sources refer to Frederick J. Volckman (or Falkman), but it is generally agreed that the names refer to the same person. In the United States the name has evolved to Feltner.
