Walter, Hulda Saenger (1867–1929)
Hulda Saenger Walter, an early writer of German verse in Texas, was born in Fredericksburg, Gillespie County, on January 7, 1867. She was the daughter of William and Henriette (Klingelhoefer) Saenger. Hulda Saenger's first poem, written when she was eleven years old, was "Jesu meine Zuversicht" (Jesus my confidence). She married Fred Walter on October 2, 1890; they were the parents of a daughter. Throughout her life Hulda Walter published poems in such Texas newspapers as Das Wochenblatt and the Waco Post, as well as in Die Amerika, Die Abendschule,and Die Deutsche Hausfrau. Two of her poems were presented by Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson, wife of the president of the United States, to Frau Luise Erhard, wife of German Chancellor Ludwig Erhard, to commemorate a conference held by their husbands at the Lyndon Baines Johnson ranch in 1963. Hulda Saenger Walter died in Fredericksburg on January 6, 1929, and was buried there.
