Sidney Roper Weisiger, Victoria historian and newspaper columnist, son of Robert Sidney and Minnie Ola (Farrington) Weisiger, was born in Victoria County, Texas, on November 29, 1906. He married Hilda Geistman on April 20, 1929; the couple had three children. Though Weisiger worked as a plumber, he attended Victoria Junior College and St. Mary's University and was an avid reader of history. Because his father became sheriff of Victoria County in 1906 Weisiger grew up with an interest in county affairs, including history. He was active in the Victoria County Historical Survey Committee and later its successor, the Victoria County Historical Commission. He became interested in genealogy in 1965, and this interest eventually led to his cataloging all the cemeteries in Victoria County. In 1970 he began writing a weekly article for the Victoria Advocate entitled "Vignettes of Old Victoria." In 1971 he began publishing a daily article entitled "Sidney's Journal." Weisiger's "Vignettes" were more structured than his journal articles and were carefully researched and documented. After his death all the journal articles were compiled into a book by Robert Shook and Hilda Weisiger, Sidney's Journal (1976). Weisiger spent many hours researching information in the county clerk's office and the old files of the Victoria Advocate. When he died his valuable collection of manuscript material was purchased by Victoria College, where it is housed in the college library. Weisiger died suddenly of a heart attack on May 23, 1975, in San Marcos. His contribution to local history was officially recognized on November 28, 1982, when a Texas historical marker was dedicated at his gravesite in Evergreen Cemetery, Victoria.
