Stephen B. Wilson was a Confederate military officer in the Sixth Texas Cavalry. He was born about 1833 in Arkansas. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Wilson enlisted in the Confederate army on September 10, 1861, in Dallas as a first lieutenant. The twenty-eight-year-old Wilson was one of the 1,150 men from seven North Texas counties who organized that day for service in the war. Assigned to Company C, the regiment skirmished in the Indian Territory, fought at Elkhorn Tavern, and then moved east of the Mississippi River where it was attached to Roane’s-Phifer’s Brigade of the Army of the West. On May 26, 1862, Wilson was promoted to captain and took over command of his original company. In October 1862 Wilson and his men saw action at Corinth, Mississippi, where he was “wounded slightly.”

On December 21, 1863, while serving as part with John W. Whitfield’s Brigade of the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, Wilson was promoted to the rank of major. For the next year, Wilson and the Sixth Cavalry Regiment served as part of Lawrence Sullivan “Sul” Ross’s Brigade of the Army of Mississippi and, later, the Army of Tennessee, and from November to December 1864 it participated in the Franklin-Nashville campaign of Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. On December 7, 1864, Wilson was severely wounded near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, when a musket ball fractured the lower third of his femoral region. Like many Confederate wounded, he was left behind enemy lines and captured by Union forces. On January 31, 1865, Wilson succumbed to his wounds in Number 4 United States General Hospital in Murfreesboro. He was thirty-two years old.
