Jeremiah M. Wood, state representative, was born in Greenville County, South Carolina, on March 4, 1804. He was the son of West and Nancy (Smith) Wood. Upon reaching adulthood he relocated to Perry County, Tennessee, about 1825. He married Mary Polly Graham there in 1827. While in Perry County, Wood was appointed justice of the peace and was later appointed a trustee of Perry Academy (also known as Linden Academy) by the state legislature. In 1849 he immigrated with his family to Texas, along with several other families from Perry County. They settled in Cass County, Texas, and chose to name the county seat after their hometown of Linden, Tennessee. Here, Wood was very active in local affairs. He organized a Sabbath school at Linden’s Center Chapel, served as a grand juror on the first county court held in 1852, and represented Cass County at a number of Democratic state conventions. In 1853 he was elected to represent Cass County in the Fifth Texas Legislature. He was re-elected to the Sixth Texas Legislature in 1855. Afterwards, he lobbied at the state level for the construction of railroads in and around Cass County. Wood remained in Linden for the rest of his life. He died on August 10, 1870, and was buried at Center Grove Cemetery in Linden.
