BARTLETT, CHURCHILL JONES
BARTLETT, CHURCHILL JONES (1862–1930). Churchill Jones Bartlett, legislator and Texas secretary of state, was born in Marlin, Texas, on June 6, 1862, the son of Zenas and Sarah Kendrick (Jones) Bartlett, and the grandson of Churchill Jones. He attended the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University) in 1878–79 and became city secretary and treasurer at Marlin about 1885. He served in this capacity until 1895, when he was elected justice of the peace. On November 30, 1892, he married Bodie Christian of Eddy, who died in 1894. Bartlett became postmaster at Marlin about 1896 but retired to go into the insurance business. In 1906 and again in 1908 he was elected from the Sixty-seventh District to the Texas House of Representatives, where he served as chairman of the Committee on Public Lands and Land Office. He was secretary of state under Governor James E. Ferguson. Bartlett was a Democrat, a Mason, and an Elk. He died in Marlin on September 27, 1930, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery.
